India’s Kerala Faces Extreme Weather as IMD Issues Red Alerts for Torrential Rains in Thrissur, Ernakulam, Malappuram and Idukki, Triggering Widespread Flooding: New Update You Need to Know

India’s Kerala is currently grappling with extreme weather conditions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for four major districts—Thrissur, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Idukki—in anticipation of torrential rainfall. This severe weather is expected to trigger widespread flooding, with the heavy downpours threatening to overwhelm infrastructure and disrupt daily life. These districts, known for their dense population and vital transportation networks, are at high risk of waterlogging, flash floods, and road blockages, which could cause significant travel disruptions and damage to properties. Authorities have already taken precautionary measures, urging residents to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel as the situation unfolds.

The torrential downpour early Tuesday led to extensive flooding across many districts, especially in Palakkad, Thrissur, and Ernakulam. In Thrissur, the rain continued into the afternoon, causing low-lying areas to flood. Major roads, such as Ikkanda Warrior Road and Palace Road, were submerged, significantly impacting traffic movement. Additionally, homes along Shankara Iyer Road and Aquatic Line were affected, with floodwaters entering buildings. The busy MG Road was also completely waterlogged, further adding to the traffic bottlenecks in the area.

The Kole Wetlands region, prone to flooding during the monsoon, was especially hard-hit. Residential areas near Aswini Hospital experienced inundation, worsening the ongoing challenges faced by the community during the rainy season.

Chelakkara, located in the northern part of Thrissur district, faced flash floods that severely impacted traffic. Roads like the Vazhakode-Plazhi and Puthur stretches became completely waterlogged, obstructing vehicles. The floodwaters surged from nearby forested areas, creating additional hazards. Further down, parts of the National Highway near Muringoor and Mannuthy were submerged, prompting detours for drivers and delays for commuters.

To mitigate risks to public safety, authorities restricted access to popular tourist destinations such as Athirappilly and Vazhachal, known for their scenic waterfalls. The closures were a precautionary measure to prevent accidents due to the ongoing rain and rising water levels.

In Palakkad, intense rainfall led to waterlogging in areas like Alanallur, with significant flooding near Kannamkundu Bridge on the Alanallur–Edathanattukara route. The situation worsened as the Thengara Kolpadam in Mannarkkad was submerged, disrupting transportation. Additionally, concerns are growing over the rising water levels in the Kunthipuzha River, which could cause further flooding in nearby areas.

In Kochi, waterlogging also caused disruptions, particularly in the Petta locality. One notable incident involved a car that fell into a drainage channel after attempting to navigate a flooded road. Fortunately, the driver emerged unscathed, and the vehicle was recovered after several hours. Local residents voiced frustration, stating that the narrow road was regularly prone to flooding, but no long-term solutions have been implemented despite repeated complaints.

In Pathanamthitta, plans to release water from the Kakki-Anathode Dam were revised. The shutters, initially scheduled to open at 11 am, remained closed after a decrease in rainfall in the dam’s catchment area. This precautionary measure was implemented after assessing water levels and consulting with local authorities.

The IMD has predicted that Kerala will continue to experience heavy rainfall for the next several days, with the likelihood of thunderstorms along the Kerala coast until August 6. Winds of up to 50 km/h are expected along the coast. As a result, the IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions.

India’s Kerala is facing extreme weather, with the IMD issuing red alerts for Thrissur, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Idukki due to expected torrential rains. These downpours are predicted to cause widespread flooding, waterlogging, and significant disruptions to daily life and travel.

As Kerala faces ongoing rainfall, residents and visitors are urged to stay informed and take the necessary precautions. The weather has already caused significant disruptions, including flooding and waterlogging across urban and rural areas. Authorities are working diligently to manage the situation, but public cooperation is essential to minimize risks. People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors when possible, and secure their homes against potential flooding.

With further rainfall expected, it is critical for residents to remain vigilant and prepared. Local authorities will continue monitoring the situation, providing updates, and implementing safety measures to ensure the well-being of the public. The cooperation of the public in following safety guidelines will play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of this severe weather event.
